Formula and meaning

Battery capacity, start and target state of charge, charging power, and efficiency define an idealized average charging time.

E₍battery₎ = C · (SOC₂ − SOC₁) / 100 · E₍grid₎ = E₍battery₎ / η · t = E₍grid₎ / P

Example and limits

Context

82 kWh from 20% to 80% at 11 kW and 90% efficiency gives 49.2 kWh in the battery, 54.667 kWh from the grid, and about 4 h 58 min.

Charging power is treated as constant. DC fast charging is affected by the charging curve, temperature, vehicle, charger, and battery management; the estimate is generally closer for AC charging. No vehicle-specific charging curve or automatic infrastructure selection is included.
