How we build and verify our calculators
NormCalc combines interactive engineering calculations with traceable technical articles. This page explains how sources, formulas, units, examples and software are checked.
Research and sources
We split each task into concrete user questions and prioritize standards, authorities, BIPM, NIST, scientific institutes, universities and supplier documentation. For standards-based tools, the exact standard edition and scope are the primary basis. Secondary sources explain terms and applications but do not replace the standard.
Formula and unit checks
Every formula is checked against an independent technical source and at least one reference case. Inputs are checked for quantity type, unit, sign and model boundaries. The shared conversion layer reduces values to SI internally before formatting the selected output unit.
Examples and automated tests
Where structured reference data is available, article examples use the same calculation logic as the interactive tool. Standards-based pages without machine-readable examples use separately checked reference cases. Unit and browser tests cover typical values, edge cases, language variants, navigation and invalid-input feedback.
Assumptions and limits
A calculator is a preliminary model within a stated scope. Load spectra, supplier curves, assembly, temperature, ageing, safety, standard edition and project-specific boundary conditions may require additional checks. These limits are shown beside the tool and in the article.
AI transparency and review
Research and editorial drafts are software-assisted. Formulas, units, sources and reference examples are then checked against the documented sources and automated tests. We name the responsible editorial area and last review date; an external reviewer is named only when actually involved.
Updates
Sources, standard editions and external data can change. Time-dependent tools document data source, retrieval time and failure behavior. Changes to formulas, units or categories are tracked with tests and versioned commits.
