Vout = Vin·R₂/(R₁+R₂); a connected load changes the ratio.

MINTSI
01

Inputs

Tap voltage across R₂ without load.

Supply voltage across the series pair.

Resistance between Vin and the tap.

Resistance between tap and reference potential.

02

Result

Select a target and calculate.

Calculation

Vout = Vin · R₂/(R₁ + R₂)

Vout = Vin·R₂/(R₁+R₂); a connected load changes the ratio.

Understand the inputs
  • Output voltage VoutTap voltage across R₂ without load.
  • Input voltage VinSupply voltage across the series pair.
  • Upper resistor R₁Resistance between Vin and the tap.
  • Lower resistor R₂Resistance between tap and reference potential.
Example

12 V with 1 kΩ/(1.4 kΩ+1 kΩ) gives 5 V.

Assumptions and limits

Unloaded divider; source and load resistance are excluded.
