Turning data and cutting time

Determine speed, feed, cutting time and removal rate for one longitudinal turning pass.

IJ 5
01

Inputs

One pass at constant diameter; no CSS control, power or tool-life calculation.

02

Results

Enter values and run the calculation.

Method

What is calculated?

Cutting speed and current diameter set spindle speed. For longitudinal turning, removal rate is approximately cutting speed times feed times depth of cut.

Equations

n = 1000vc/(πd)

vf = n·f

Qw = vc·f·ap

Practice

Application and limits

Set a lathe, estimate cycle time and compare removal rates.

One pass at constant diameter; no CSS control, power or tool-life calculation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which diameter applies to facing?

Diameter changes continuously; this constant-diameter calculator is only approximate for facing.

Is ap radial or diametral?

ap is radial depth of cut; diameter reduction is 2ap.
